I find that ideas from others can, when applied with structure and discipline, lead to some level of proficency. This seems to hold, however long it takes, in everything from planning and executing a joint venture to dancing.
But to truly master something seems to require ideas (and or application) that is entirely original. To be clear, I define 'original' here simply as something that is come by through quiet reflection, however inspired.
I find the difference is as between following prescribed roadmaps vs mapping one's own path. And they are not mutually exclusive by any means, whatever it takes to get started I just think following one's path is where the magic really starts.
